SS Dorrigo Campground Inskip Point

If you're planning to go camping at Inskip Peninsula, I've got some great news for you! There are two amazing options to choose from - you can set up camp with a breathtaking ocean view of Double Island Point or pick a more sheltered spot amongst the red ash and sheoaks surrounding the area. There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained such as fishing, walking, and driving around the recreation area and marine park.

Fun fact for you! The names of six camping areas on the Inskip Peninsula are named after past shipping history. One of them is called S.S. Dorrigo, which is named after a tragic event. On Good Friday, April 2, 1926, the steamer S.S. Dorrigo was on its way from Brisbane to Thursday Island when it sank in heavy seas several kilometres off Double Island Point. Although the captain and his son were rescued, unfortunately, 21 crew members disappeared without a trace. The body of the bo'sun was found on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island).

Cobb and Campground

Cobb & Co Nine Mile Camping Grounds is a historic location located on 50 acres of lush land by Six Mile Creek, just south of Gympie. This site was once the old Cobb and Co Horse Change Stables, which served as the first stop on the stagecoach run from Gympie to Noosa back in 1878. On arrival, you will find 50 acres of flat, grassy space for camping, with enough room for everyone to camp without being crowded. All camping areas are unpowered, with no marked-out sites or concrete slabs. You can choose where to camp when you arrive. Campfires are allowed in all camping areas, and you can buy firewood from reception or bring your own. However, chainsaws are not permitted on the camping grounds.

You can learn the tales of tough pioneers, railroad navies, drunken miners, bushrangers, hidden gold, and skilful stagecoach drivers with their dry humour that helped forge this land in the late 1800s. At the creek, you can also see the remains of the old bridge that serviced the bullock teams, railroad workers, bridge builders, and where the train passengers disembarked to catch the stagecoach to Noosa and then by steamship (The Gulgoa) to Brisbane. Additionally, the site of Queensland’s worst train derailment, the Rocky Mail Train disaster, where 10 people lost their lives in 1925, is located nearby.
